What not to wear?

I finally mustered the courage to step on the scale and see my post-vacation weight. I gained a whopping four pounds on our one-week cruise. I was mortified, but Max didn’t think a “few pounds” was “any big deal.” Maybe this is because Max, like most men, loses weight effortlessly. All he would need to do is cut one thing out of his diet, and he is sure to lose five pounds in a week. On the other hand, it will take me two or three weeks of very restrictive dieting before widdling down to my pre-cruise weight. How discouraging!

Being even four pounds heavier does limit my wardrobe choices for this weekend’s highlight event--my high school class reunion. Still, this isn’t my primary concern. Instead, I am totally confused as to the appropriate dress for what is being described as 21st high school class dinner/ BYOB barbeque at a country club, featuring DJ, dancing, and photographer. Hmm???

Is it just me or, after 20 years, does a BYOB reunion strike you as being just a tad… well… uh… high schoolish. I mean, really, as a class didn’t we already do this at something called PROM?

Still, I decided to seek advice on my wardrobe dilemma. I e-mailed my old friend Brent, who plans to drive 12 hours just to spend one evening at the reunion with me.

After debating whether to bring wine or hard liquor to the reunion (knowing full well that there will be plenty of Budweiser to bum off others), Brent and I couldn’t come to resolution on what to wear. Brent said he’d wear a dirty wife beater if I’d wear Daisy Dukes and a tube top, but somehow I didn’t think Max would go for it. So instead I turn to you, dear Bloggers, for fashion advice.

What do you think I should wear to the evening’s event? Do I go semi-casual, really casual, or wear something that will make folks remember me for the 51 class reunion?

The daisy dukes could be interesting but I would think semi-casual.

I'd definitely go for memorable - but classy. Don't under-dress. I did that for a decade reunion I went to and it made me uncomfortable the whole day.

I'm thinking something semi-casual but classy. A cute skirt or capris.. you'll be fabulous!

Semi-casual should be the right ticket, Diane. As for the weight thing, you're right about guys. At my age losing weight isn't all that easy but I vary 4 pounds on a day to day basis. It's hard to imagine clothes fitting different with such a small variation--but pants are far more forgiving of that sort of thing than some of the fancy duds that girls wear. Good luck with the weight and wardrobe!

Go for a cute, simple, comfortable sundress (or something similar). I know you have one (or five) of those... ;o)

Have fun! Can't wait to hear the details...I personally have shunned all of my own reunions, so now I can learn from you whether or not my fears are warranted. Ha!

I was thinking along the lines of what amyd said. My first mental picture was a light halter sundress and wedge espadrilles so if you have to walk around in the grass. It's still somewhat casual yet you'll look like a million bucks. Plus, dresses are comfy and can be very forgiving of your 4 pound problem. Personally, I wish I only had for pounds that I needed to burn off. Add a 0 to the end and that's what I get. I hope you have a blast at hte reunion. I can't wait to hear all about it. Also, I'm glad you had a nice honeymoon.

It is a horrible thing, a birth defect really, but I lack the fashion gene. Just ask anyone who knows me. I am terrible. But I am sure you will look great!
