Bloggers, A Moment of Your Time?

Still a newbie to this whole virtual world, I still have lots of questions about the blogging phenomenon. Most of you, who have been kind enough to drop by and say hi, have been doing this for quite some time. I'd like to glean from your experience. And since I've had little time to go back and read your archives, I have a couple questions to ask you.

1. What got you blogging and why do you persist at it?
2. Is there anything you do to keep your site fresh and generate those sometimes hilarious and always thought-provoking posts? I mean, what's your secret? I'm always struggling for ideas.
3. Could you include the link of your all-time favorite post? Why was it your favorite?
4. Is there some grand blogging etiquette rule you'd care to share with a freshman like myself?

One of my favorite bloggers, Kara has sent some of you interview questions to post at your site. If you're participating in the interview, please follow through with her first. But if you get a moment to come back and answer my questions, I'd appreciate it.

Well I started blogging to let my family know what I was doing offshore. My friend Tisha got me started. It actually surprised me the first time someone I didn't know or had sent the link left a comment on there. It said "Write about something interesting"

I also struggle to find interesting things to write about. I steal lots of ideas from KOM and daJerk.

With the exception of KOM, Jerk and others listed on my blog. http://bigtool.blogspot.com/
This guy has some seriously funny shit.

I also HEART KARA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
She is one of the first people I ever started reading her blog. She has a HUGE crush on me ;)

1. You did
2. You are kidding right? I mean my life was built for the blogging phenomenon. Getting out of bed tends to be a comedy show. And don't get me started with the material you provide me.
3. Xavierism is my favorite. He lifts my spirits.
4. Etiquette...if you don't like what you read...leave. Don't hurt other people's feelings deliberately.

Kara rocks & rolls & if she had a crush on Dave...well I think he must be delusional.

I was inspired by another blogger. Her blog documented a project and was incredibly well-written and entertaining. I thought, "I need a project. I can do this." Grateful Dating became my project.

2. Is there anything you do to keep your site fresh and generate those sometimes hilarious and always thought-provoking posts? I mean, what's your secret? I'm always struggling for ideas.
I won't claim to be "fresh" or "hilarious" but my process is something like this: If something happens during the day that is related to my theme (dating), then I'll write about it. If something pops into my head, I'll write about it. I have a few things in the hopper that could be posted at any time--childhood stories or part of my RealLife™ Dating Guidelines series. Sometimes I worry about running out of material, but even a boring day has a moment or two that is funny and worth a paragraph--and a post doesn't need to be any longer than that. Since I committed to the project, it hasn't been that hard to keep it up. The problem is not letting it take up all my time.

3. Could you include the link of your all-time favorite post? Why was it your favorite?
All time favorite? That's tough. I like attraction a lot. The internet dating guidelines seemed to strike a chord with readers. Actually, the most recent post is usually my favorite.

4. Is there some grand blogging etiquette rule you'd care to share with a freshman like myself?
I don't care for it when people ask me to link to them. Generally, I'll link to you if you link to me or if I like your blog. But I don't like to be asked because then I might have to say no and that would be rude. (Some bloggers post a notice saying they'll link to you if you link to them and all you have to is ask. I can't bring myself to ask.)

You seem to be doing quite well for yourself, but I'll add my two cents just because I like to hear my own voice.

1 - I set up my blog in 02 or 03, and put up one post. It wasn't until the beginning of this year that I started again. To be honest, I don't remember the specific catalyst.

2 - As I have no hilarious or thought-provoking entries, I am unqualified to answer. I just blog about what's on my mind at any given time - hit or miss. To try to blog can be frustrating.

3 - Mine, or someone else's? I guess it doesn't matter, because I can't remember :)

4 - I have to agree with Jamy on this one - I often ask if I can link other sites, but it does become akward if someone asks if you will link to them. Additionally, I usually do the reciprocal link thing (I use technorati to see who's linking in), but I've had to remove a few sites that turned... weird. Hell, I probably wouldn't link to my own blog!

Thanks for giving me something to read. There's a lot of crap out there, and it's always good to read something intelligent.

Awww, I'm blushing. You guys are too sweet. And for the record, David was the one with the crush on *me*!

Unfortunately, no time to answer your questions right now, but I'll be back to do it! I've got to get out of town!!
