Much Ado About Nuthin’

Damn, it's HOT! And there is certainly a drought around these parts, although I'm not referring to the weather.

It’s been a slow news week here at the Martini lounge, but I feel compelled to write to you nonetheless.

Max jetted off to the West Coast for a series of meetings and he won’t be home until Friday. He calculated that, between business trips and vacation, he only has 20 more days left in the office before our move. Wow.

With my honey gone, I’ve been spending a lot of time in front of the computer. I worked on a couple of photobooks of the wedding and honeymoon to take Max's family in Egypt, started creating an online trip journal to chronicle the trip, finished a web site and flyer to market my condominium (I’ve decided to attempt selling it by owner for the first few weeks), and have been trying to figure out how to switch my Blogger address to the custom domain I purchased a couple weeks back. I’ve read all the help sections on this topic, but haven’t, for the life of me, been able to get it to work. Talk about feeling like a big dummy! The futile attempt has been so frustrating, I almost threw my computer off my balcony.

Speaking of computers, my old laptop is soon to part this world. I can tell that, in the not too distant future, I’m gonna power it up only to see the blue screen of death. I can’t say I’ll mourn the loss, and, in fact, have been already eyeing a replacement. Like many of the Republican candidates running for president in 2008, I’m looking at a younger, more chic model as my new counterpart. ;-)

That’s right folks, I’m thinking of going Mac. My whole life I’ve been a PC user and felt this allegiance severed me well. But as I undertake various projects on my old Dell, I can’t help but think that these tasks might be easier to perform on a Mac. Who knows? Maybe I’ve been duped by the creative marketers at Apple. SO, I’d be curious to know what system you use. And if you switched from PC to Mac, I’m especially curious about your experience.

All my computers are IBM compatible, Diane. I have to use Macs occasionally at work and don't like them--but I'm sure once you're used to them they're just fine. In the long run I doubt the platform matters very much.

I'm surprised about the domain problems. I thought Blogger was supposed to forward folk to other names pretty well. I have a couple names I own that I don't use--maybe I'll try moving Utenzi over to one of them to try out the process.

Info on how to change the domain is here (if you haven't already found it):

You have to do some stuff on the domain side before the change in blogger will work. But it's easy--I just did it myself.

Re: the mac. I've been using one at home for over ten years. I've had problems, but just the normal ones. I've always had PCs at work/school and mac at home. I prefer mac, but both work just fine for most things. Macs are prettier and their laptops are great--I travel with mine all the time.

Do invest in a good external hard drive and get yourself 100% backed up NOW before the current machine dies. You won't regret it!

Oh, and the one thing I would do differently if I had my computer to buy over again: get the maximum amount of hard drive if you plan store music/photos on your machine. That stuff just eats up memory.

THE MAC is the best!! My husband and I each have the one and it's unbeatable!

The only time I ever touched a Mac was at my daughter's house, and I didn't like it at all.

Being in your situation not long ago (my PC died on me in Oct of last year)... I did not even think twice about switching... I been eye Apple for a while now and I figure that it was a sign of faith that the DELL finally kicked the bucket. I got a MacBook and I have never regret it... I had it for over 8 months, I NEVER EVER had a crash, or a slow down or a blink or a bit from it.. its a well oiled machine... just the fact that I can take anywhere, and connect with no hassels, no need of a IT PHD course... its enough for me and like someone mention, they are awesome when it comes to design. Now run to www.apple.com and get one! go.. go GO!

computers are computers. there's going to be a chance you'll have a problem with anything you buy. personally, i've gone from pc to mac and love it's ease of use. i don't think you'd end up regretting it at all. just be prepared for a little time for learning the differences between the two operating systems.

and i echo the above, save your data often!

I am not computer savvy but I do read Consumer Reports and Apple computers are always rated the highest in customer satisfaction. They are also the one with the least repairs needed.

i do a lot of graphics stuff on my computer so macs are perfect for me. the transition from pc to mac isn't too hard if you have some basic computer savvy and you might like mac laptops better. still, there are a lot of programs (especially games) that are only devloped for pcs.
