D-day

I've got my bag packed. Once those contractions start, I'll head to the hospital.

That's right. I've been keeping a secret from you.

No! Not THAT, sillies.

My dearest friends Shannon and Scott have asked me to be in the delivery room for the birth of their first child. I cannot even begin to tell you how honored I am by their request--also a little nervous, but honored just the same.

People ask me if I think about what the experience will be like. I don't think about it. Although I've never been pregnant, I do know every birth is different. Why should I dwell on it? At this moment, I only think about two things--being a witness to a new life entering this world and giving my sweet Shannon what she needs during that time. I don't have a clue what that is, but I guess I'll find out on the big day...

Which, by the way, should be any day now. We are well into week 39. In fact, I'm practicing my breathing exercises as I type this post.

It's Friday and my second attempt at podcasting has been posted. Check here if you have 3 or 4 minutes to spare. You'll need Quicktime to hear it.

I had three children myself, but watching my niece take her first breath was something I will never EVER forget.

You blessed to be able to see this. You will not regret it.

How exciting! What an amazing experience you will have by witnessing the birth. I doubt it will scare you off much from attempting to have your own. I mean, if that were the case, lots of doctors and nurses wouldn't have babies and we just KNOW that's not the case. ;o)

I hope that delivery goes well, Diane. Given your personal interest in the birth/pregnancy situation, if there's any complications you might never get close to Max again. Just remember, every person you see is the result of a successful pregnancy! It usually works out great.

Diane, that will be one of the most profound experiences of your life!

I saw your name at Michele's Meet N' Greet and unfortunately, when I clicked on it, I got a window that said page not found! You may need to correct that (but I don't know how).

Hi! Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment on my blog. Counterparts indeed... I'm THREE times divorced...

And, I used to be a labor assistant so I've attended several births and there is. nothing. like. it.

You will not regret it! Now, go buy the book called The Birth Partner. Although you're not technically the "partner", it will give you some great tips on what to do (and not do). Good luck!!

How exciting!! Most couples want to be alone with the arrival of their new baby.

I've had two kids myself. Both different labors, different births. My ex (was my husband at the time) wasn't able to be there for the birth of my oldest and I called my sister-in-law to help me. She was my coach and was happy to experience the birth with me.

You'll do fine. It's your presence that's important. :)

Oh, hello, Michele sent me.

when i was in labor there was a nurse who used a very relaxing massage technique called effleurage that was gentle and relaxing. if you can learn to do this simple massage, your friend will adore you! here's a link for some basic info:

That is such a huge honor - I was in the delivery room for my best friends' daughter's birth and it was emotional as all get out...

Cool stuff about the baby. I think it's going to be such an interesting experience. It was cool for me as the dad, I wonder what it would be like as a friend. I hope that goes well for Shannon.
