The rest of the story

My constant supporter, Max, came with me for my initial visit with Dr. Sych. He was understandably concerned about the fibroid and wondered how this would factor in to our chances to conceive.

While it took us 45 minutes to get in to see the doctor, my appointment only lasted 15 minutes. Max remained in the waiting room while I was examined. When I got through the appointment and emerged so quickly, he could only think the news was not good.

“That was quick. What happened? What did the doctor say?” he asked in earshot of no fewer than 10 women who were also waiting to see the doctor.

“Not here. Let’s talk when we get outside.” I said quickly.

It only took a few minutes to get to the car, but to a poor, worried Max, it seemed like forever.

“Now, tell me what happened,” he pleaded as soon as we stepped outside the office door.

Still reeling from the surprising news, I could do nothing more than hand Max the picture of the ultrasound Dr. Sych had given me as a a memento of my time in the stirrups.

Understandably, Max looked confused.

“What’s this?” he asked.

“I’ve been told it’s a baby.” I replied with just a hint of emotion.

“A WHAT?!?” Max was both shocked and overwhelmed; tears began welling up in his eyes.

It took days for either of us to really believe we were pregnant. Saturday, Doctor Sych called to say blood tests confirmed the results of the ultrasound.

Despite our excitement, Max and I are trying to remain cautious during these early weeks. The truth is I don’t feel pregnant—no morning sickness, no real exhaustion, and only a slight tenderness in my breasts. I’ve also read some sobering statistics. One in three pregnancies end in miscarriage when the mother is over 40. Moreover, the results of my blood tests did a reveal a slightly low level of progesterone. Although it’s not a huge concern according to the doctor, he decided to call me back Monday to give me supplemental medication to raise the levels.

“It’s good you are pregnant,” Dr. Sych said with a grin. “I’m happy, you're happy. Now we’ll just have to pray about it.”

Even though I’m not a religious person, I took comfort in his words and understood them in the spirit in which they were intended. Dr. Sych would be taking no chances with my pregnancy, which is considered high risk because of age and not the fibroid. In fact, Dr. Sych has asked me to come back again this Friday for a follow-up —my third appointment in eight days.

So until then, Max and I will wait…

and pray.

Well, congratulations are definitely in order then!! I can't imagine what you must be feeling...fear, anxiety, elation...just remember to breathe. Ultimately, you have only a small amount of control over what happens with your pregnancy, you know? So, try to relax and enjoy the ride...it will make you and your little one much less stressed...my thoughts are with you...

Thank you for finishing the story! I would have felt cheated otherwise. And I welled up when Max did.

Guess he's going to be the one having Martinis from now on ... though German doctors are not against the odd glass of wine!

Yeah! Odds are very much on your side. Why didn't Max go in with you? He has to get over any of that squeamishness to be a real partner in this stuff. It's kind of gross but it's the miracle of life! Shall keep that little bundle o' cells, soon to be a bundle o' joy, in my prayers. You guys deserve this good news!

Diane--tons of FIRST pregnancies, at ANY age end in miscarriage. So, if possible, don't get attached yet...and if it doesn't work out this time, you will have another chance. It's good news no matter what!

However, I am also praying that this pregnancy will be successful. :)

Wow, I'm excited for you and all the cool medical care you receive. My medical group won't even allow me to see an ob/gyn before week 8. And you know what they say: Fuck the statistics.
