Hair woes

I called to make a hair appointment for next week. I don't know why I am even bothering. It's not as if I am going to have a good hair day for some time to come. Blonde highlights, which lifted my natural shade and gave my fine, thin locks a little body will be whacked off and not retouched because color, like so many things I love, is potentially harmful to a pregnancy.

I thought fine wines and martinis would be the things I missed most during a 9-month stint, but I now believe it will be the sense of renewal I felt every time I emerged from my stylist freshly coifed.

To be honest, I don't even know what my original hair color looks like anymore. A month shy of 41, I am sure little grey monsters now rule the roost up on my crown, but I've never actually had to face the reality. Come next week, there will be no denying the truth.

And since I won't have the benefit of a little artificial boost, I'm thinking of having my lifeless locks cut even shorter than normal and have been scouring the Internet for a new, radically short, do.

Here is what I found.

Meet Desiree Rogers, President-elect Obama's new White House social secretary. Not only do I covet her new job responsibilities (how cool would that job be!), but I'm sort of digging her look.

What do you think? If you have any other suggestions, I'd love to see them.

You would be gorgeous like this!

I've dyed my hair since I was 18. I don't know my real hair color either! And....I dyed it through both pregnancies. Both have 10 fingers and 10 toes and do well in school. So, maybe, just maybe, coloring your hair could be an option?

I dyed my hair for the first time a few months ago and greatly enjoyed it. I thought they now had colour options that were pregnancy safe. Is there anything your stylist can reccomend?

Hon, that haircolor thing is yet another one of those ohmygodyourepregnant myths, especially if you get a blonde weave, which doesn't even touch your scalp. I have that on the authority of three different ob's. SO, go get yourself colored and don't worry.

Loving Desiree's look - it would be fabulous on you. (Very envious that both you and she can carry it off - it's my dream hairstyle.)

That's cute! I'm no help in the hair department because I only get it cut once a year when we visit my parents. I simply don't trust a German who I can't communicate with to touch my hair :)

I love the short look - you would look stunning!

I didn't risk it, but I missed using the temp dyes when I was pregnant. I don't like to mess with my hair all the time (that would require me to be organized) but the temporary dyes seem to protect the hair, or condition it, or something... my hair feels nice for weeks after.

By the way, stay away from those so called 'henna' tattoos as well. Most of those are hair dye chemicals at crazy-high concentrations (it's been reported true on Snopes and elsewhere - and sorry if I'm bugging you with something you know already. I've met too many people who do not and, let their kids get these things).

Anyway, a Mayo clinic article says this, the FDA says this, and WebMD says this.

I know exactly what you mean...

I emerge from the shower twice per week with a sense of renewal.

I think anything you choose will look nice one you. Personally I like short hair. I had no idea that highlighting hair was bad for a fetus but I did recently hear that a glass of wine once in a while was not a bad thing. Funny, in my day we weren't so worried about this stuff in moderation of course and I have a healthy 42 yr old (god I'm old)...ciao

Hmmm...I (like others who have commented) colored my hair throughout my pregnancy. My stylist at the time told me that the chemicals they use now are drastically different than the ones that doctors worried about. She used Wella products on my hair (you know, that fantastic German company) :)

It's my understanding that hair dyes are better now than when I was pregnant 13 years ago, but I understand the desire to be as safe as possible. My 12 year has been asking for a pixie cut since she was 8, a la Alyssa Milano. It would look great on you!

I'm sure whatever hairdo you choose, it'll look great on you! I never knew hair color could harm babies :o You learn something new every day!

Hesitant to offer advice since I haven't a professional cut in two years.
